New Serbian stamps and FDC: Europa 2015 Old Toys

Two new Europa stamps and FDC. Release date 16.04.2015.

Netherlands: Nieuwegein

Nieuwegein is a municipality and city in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is bordered on the north by the city of Utrecht, the provincial capital. It is separated from Vianen to the south by the river Lek and borders on IJsselstein in the southwest and Houten in the east.

Nieuwegein was founded on 1 July 1971 as a planned city, following the merger of the former municipalities of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk. The new town was built for the expanding population of the city of Utrecht, and grew rapidly during the decades following its foundation.

Nieuwegein is connected to Utrecht and IJsselstein by light rail. There is a pedestrian ferry across the river Lek to Vianen.

Three canals flow through Nieuwegein: the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, the Lek River and the Merwede Canal.

Thank You Laura

Indonesia: Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi, is an active stratovolcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. It is located approximately 28 kilometres north of the large Yogyakarta city, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 metres above sea level.

Smoke can be seen emerging from the mountaintop at least 300 days a year, and several eruptions have caused fatalities. Pyroclastic flow from a large explosion killed 27 people on 22 November 1994, mostly in the town of Muntilan, west of the volcano. Another large eruption occurred in 2006, shortly before the Yogyakarta earthquake. In light of the hazards that Merapi poses to populated areas, it has been designated as one of the Decade Volcanoes.

Thank You Linda!

Finland: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

This postcard comes from Finland and this is one of my favorites postcrossing postcards and fantastic surprise from Lasse.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a 1989 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the fifth feature film based on Star Trek, and a sequel to the 1966–1969 Star Trek television series. Taking place shortly after the events of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the plot follows the crew of the USS Enterprise-A as they confront a renegade Vulcan, Sybok, who is searching for God at the center of the galaxy.

The film was directed by cast member William Shatner, following two films directed by his co-star, Leonard Nimoy. Shatner also developed the initial storyline in which Sybok searches for God but instead finds an alien being. Series creator Gene Roddenberry disliked the original script, while Nimoy and DeForest Kelley objected to the premise that their characters, Spock and Leonard McCoy, would betray Shatner's James T. Kirk. The script went through multiple revisions to please the cast and studio, including cuts in the effects-laden climax of the film. Despite a writers' guild strike cutting into the film's pre-production, Paramount commenced filming in October 1988.

India: two postcards and three banknotes

I have received two postcards and three banknotes from my friend Subramanya from India.

For those who grew up on a steady diet of the epic drama Mahabharatha and Tipu Sultan, the Elephant Stables in Hampi are sure to bring back to memory fantastic wars fought between seemingly invincible dynasties as kings faced each other atop elephants. Incredible domed structures, fitting for the majestic, royal beings that were housed here, Elephant stables is a row of 11 chambers with the one in the center, distinct with its temple-style tower, grander than the 5 on its either sides.

Bearing a faded and slightly decrepit appearance the stables still stand as firmly as when they were in use, housing the royal Elephants. Inside the chambers, on the roof are metal hooks used in tying the Elephants and towards the rear of each chamber are small openings, possibly used by the mahouts to enter the chambers.

Fronted with a carpet of green, you can see the alternating pattern of the domes from outside while the central chamber is decorated with wall carvings and frescoes on the ceiling and was perhaps used for gatherings, celebrations and events that involved the stables royal residents.

The Western Ghats are a mountain range that runs almost parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula, located entirely in India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world. It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India. The range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain, called Konkan, along the Arabian Sea. A total of thirty nine properties including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests were designated as world heritage sites - twenty in Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in Tamil Nadu and four in Maharashtra.

Five, ten and twenty rupees banknotes.

Thank you very much Subramanya!

Finland: Claude Monet

Nice postcard form Finland with portrait of Claude Monet.

Oscar-Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), which was exhibited in 1874 in the first of the independent exhibitions mounted by Monet and his associates as an alternative to the Salon de Paris.

Thank You Eeva!

Netherlands: Pelican

Very nice postcard from Netherlands with drawing of pelican.

Pelicans are a genus of large water birds that makes up the family Pelecanidae.  The eight living pelican species have a patchy global distribution, ranging latitudinally from the tropics to the temperate zone, though they are absent from interior South America as well as from polar regions and the open ocean.
