At the place of today’s castle there stood a medieval, patrician, fortified town (fortress) of the type Wasserburg. When the nobleman Stjepan Marković/Markovich succeeded him in 1756 it was renewed in the baroque style and it was given features of a castle.

A baroque castle with the U-shaped ground plan (the so called three-winged castle was built from 1771 to 1777 by Antun Janković. It is considered one of the most valuable and most beautiful baroque castles in Croatia.

During first centuries of its existence the Old Town was a feudal centre, but because its military role from the 16th century it developed into a lowland tower-castle of the type Wasserburg. It was connected with the settlement by a 326 steps long bridge laid on marshland.

The castle was built on the place where an old manor house stood, between 1650 and 1663, by the Orehoczy family. In 1730, through marriage, it becomes possession of the counts from the family Keglević (until1763), counts Chamaré (until 1818) and then the counts Erdödy.
