Russia: Crimea

Crimean Peninsula is disputed territory between Russia and Ukraine. I received this postcard from Russia. In 1783, Crimea was annexed by the Russian Empire. In 1954, the Crimean Oblast was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic by Nikita Khrushchev in order to bolster the "unity of Russians and Ukrainians" and the "great and indissoluble friendship" between the two peoples. In March 2014, following the ousting of pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, armed Russian special forces backed by pro-Russian separatists invaded major Ukrainian government buildings, military bases and telecommunication facilities of the peninsula and there was a referendum on reunification with Russia.Ukraine continues to assert its right over the peninsula.

Stamp is The 500th Anniversary of the Nizhny Novgorod Stone Kremlin, issued on 09.09.2015.

Thank you Nina!
