The 2020 Europa stamp theme was ancient postal routes, and the Åland contribution shows the Postal Boat Race across the Sea of Åland. Following the ancient postal route between Åland and Sweden, the Race is arranged in June every year in remembrance of the Åland and Swedish postal-farmers’ obligation to convey mail as well as passengers in all kinds of weather. Starting in 1638, the conveyance of mail continued for almost 400 years until early 1900s.Stamp is issued on 8th May 2020.

Year of the Rat on cover from Åland Islands

The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.

Åland Post issued this beautiful mini sheet with two stamps on 24.10.2019. Artist Martin Mörck based his illustration on the yellow-necked mouse and harvest mouse, placing the mice in blackberry bushes on an island in the Åland archipelago. In the background, we see the Klobben islet located in the outer archipelago of Saltvik and sailing ship Albanus.

There's also one additional stamp at the back.

Thank you so much, Kimmo!

Maxicard Europa CEPT 2019 National Birds from Åland Islands

On this maxicard from Åland Islands you can see white-tailed eagle, which was chosen for this year's Europa National Birds theme. The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is a very large eagle widely distributed across Eurasia. As are all eagles, it is a member of the family Accipitridae which includes other diurnal raptors such as hawks, kites, and harriers. White-tailed eagles usually live most of the year near large bodies of open water, including both coastal saltwater areas and inland freshwater, and require an abundant food supply and old-growth trees or ample sea cliffs for nesting.
This stamp and maxicard are issued on 9.5.2019.

There's also a nice postmark at the back side also.

Åland Islands: FDC China Dogs

I received my first cover dedicated to Year of the Dog 2018.  With this lovely miniature sheet, Swedish artist Martin Mörck continues to put his mark on the series, illustrating a time when sailing ships dominated the townscape and sailors bought China dogs as souvenirs. Produced in Staffordshire, the heart of English porcelain industry, during the 1800s, the delicate China dogs were made from glazed and decorated ceramics and particularly popular among Scandinavian and Åland sailors. The original China dogs illustrated on the miniature sheet may be viewed in the collections of the Åland Maritime Museum. Stamps are issued on 10.11.2017.

Thank you Kimmo!

Åland Islands

My first postcard from Åland Islands! The Åland Islands is a region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. It is autonomous, demilitarized and is the only monolingual Swedish-speaking region in Finland. The Åland Islands formed part of the territory ceded to Russia by Sweden under the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in September 1809. As a result, along with all other parts of Finland, they became part of the semi-autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland, and they stayed a part of Finland to this day.

As you can see, some bastard from Serbian post has again stole my stamps! Only one stamp survived, Ermine (Mustela erminea), issued on 2004-02-02.

Thank You very much Nina!
