Heat sensitive Climate Change minisheet on cover from Finland

The three stamps in the climate change stamp sheet depict the dramatic effects of climate change that are expected in the near future if we allow the climate to continue getting warmer at the current rate. The particular focus of the stamps is the effect of climate change on Finnish weather conditions, nature and society. The stamps, which are designed by Timo Berry, are made with heat-pressed ink that will change color when touched with a finger. By touching the stamp with your finger, you can see what we can expect in Finland if the constant warming of the climate is not brought under control.

Here you can see how this minisheet looks like when you little bit warm it up. Minisheet is issued on 12.9.2018.

Thank you Kimmo!

Art Award cover from Finland and stamps from Åland Islands

I received a cover from Finland with whole stamp set Art Award, issued on 06.09.2017.

Posti’s first art award was handed over to sculptor Jasmin Anoschkin in March. In addition to EUR 10,000 of prize money, the award includes the publishing of stamps based on the artist’s works.
Three playful works were selected for the stamp series: ceramic kissing lips, a koala and a giraffe, and a reindeer made of wood. The sheet was designed by Paula Salviander and consists of 15 domestic no-value indicator stamps.

Inside cover was 3 mini sheets from Åland Islands. First mini sheet is Nordic Mythology - Letesgubbar, issued on 29.03.2006. Second is also Nordic Mythology, but this time Drottningkleven, issued on 27.03.2008. Third mini sheet is Millennium - Peace Symbol, issued on 03.01.2000.

Other featured bands in this booklet are The Rasmus and Hanoi Rocks. This set was released on 11.09.2015. Print run is 150.000.

Designer was Klaus Welp: “For each stamp, I selected a band photo and a logotype that together resemble a band poster,” says Klaus Welp, the graphic artist that designed the Million miles away sheet. The background of the sheet depicts the green room backstage in the legendary Tavastia rock club, which Welp describes as an archaeological treasure of Finnish rock ’n’ roll.

Postcrossing meeting in Helsinki

I have received postcard from international Postcrossing meeting held in Helsinki. On this beautiful postcard you can see Uspenski Cathedral in summer evening. Uspenski Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie, which denotes the Dormition. The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. On the back of the cathedral, there is a plaque commemorating Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Finland during the cathedral's construction. Uspenski Cathedral is claimed to be the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.

Stamps from Finland are always unique and beautiful! This stamp with comet is from set of six stamps called Signs of the Sky, issued on 08.09.2014. Stamps are designed by Nina Rintala, and printed by Joh. Enschedé Stamps, from Netherlands.

Here you can also see awesome special cancellation for this Postcrossing meeting with famous Inge Löök's old ladies.

Thank you very much Nina!

Finland: Olavinlinna Castle

The fortress was founded by Erik Axelsson Tott in 1475 under the name Sankt Olofsborg in an effort to profit from the political turmoil following Ivan III's conquest of the Novgorod Republic. It was sited in Savonia so as to lay claim to the Russian side of the border established by the Treaty of Nöteborg.Olofsborg withstood several sieges by the Russians during the First and Second Russian-Swedish wars. A brisk trade developed under the umbrella of the castle towards the end of the 16th century, giving birth to the town of Savonlinna, which was chartered in 1639.

On 28 July 1714, the garrison capitulated to the invading Russians, and it took them only two days to take the castle in 1743, in the events leading up to the Treaty of Åbo which awarded the entire region to Empress Elizabeth of Russia.

Stamp is Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, issued on 20.01.2014.

Thank you Aleksi!
