10th Indian Ocean Games on registered cover from Mauritius

The 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games was the 10th edition of this multi-sport event for athletes representing the National Olympic Committees of Indian Ocean island nations. It was held in Mauritius from July 19 – 28, 2019. Over 2,000 athletes, from 7 countries (Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion and Seychelles), participated in the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games. Set of 3 stamps (on the left side) is issued on 19.7.2019. to commemorate this event. Stamp on the right is St. John Ambulance of Mauritius, issued on 9.10.2018.

Mauritius: Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant is a peninsula at the extreme southwestern tip of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius on the windward side of the island. It is highlighted by an eponymous basaltic monolith with a summit 556 metres above sea level. The peninsula was notorious in the early 19th century as a refuge for runaway slaves. After the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, on 1 February 1835 a police expedition was despatched there ostensibly to inform the slaves that they had been freed. At the time the slaves had been using Le Morne summit for many years as a look-out point to spot military despatches from Port Louis being sent to re-capture them. On previous occasions when these attempts had been carried out they had been spotted by the look-outs, the warning issued to the rest of the slaves who chose to leap to their deaths from the rock, rather than be recaptured back into slavery.

Postcard from Mauritius

This is my first postcard from beautiful Mauritius. Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.

This stamp is Mascarene Swallow (Phedina borbonica), from set Flora and Fauna, issued on 30.08.2013.

The Mascarene Swallow, also known as the Mascarene Martin and the 'grosse hirondelle' in French, is a rare bird with a total population of less than 500 pairs in Mauritius.
