Flags of the World Series: Macedonia

Macedonia is a country in the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia. It recently changed name to North Macedonia, but i managed to swap this card before new changed card arrive. The country became a member of the United Nations in April 1993, but as a result of a dispute with Greece over the name "Macedonia", it was admitted under the provisional description the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In June 2018, Macedonia and Greece resolved the conflict with an agreement that the country should rename itself Republic of North Macedonia. This renaming came into effect in February 2019, with a several-months-long transition for passports, license plates, currency, customs, border signs, and government websites, among other things.

Sender used two definitive stamps which depicts city Struga. Stamp is part of set issued on 11.11.2009.

50 Years of 'Europa CEPT' Stamps on registered cover from Macedonia

I received registered cover from Macedonia with stamp from set 50 Years of 'Europa CEPT' Stamps, issued on 14.6.2005. I was lucky to receive this stamp on cover, cause this stamps are not valid anymore from 9.4.2019!

I received inside whole set, which is issued on two different sheets, small one with one set, and bigger one with 2 sets, which half you can see bellow.

Cover from Macedonia

My friend Predrag from Macedonia sent me cover with nice Macedonian stamps with vegetables.

Here you can see three stamps from complete set Vegetables 2016, onion, beetroot and paprika, issued on 13.05.2016.Other stamps are carrots, issued on 02.07.2015, and cabbage, issued on 28.05.2014.

He also sent me two postcards in this cover. First is nice ad card for biking in Macedonia. 

Second postcard is from Greenpeace campaign "The future of the Arctic?" This postcard doesn't need description. This picture says it all.

I have received cover from Macedonia with two postcards inside and nice stamp set on cover.

On first postcard you can see Macedonian cuisine. Macedonian cuisine reflects Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences and shares characteristics of other Balkan cuisines. The relatively warm climate of the country provides excellent growth conditions for a variety of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Macedonian cuisine is also noted for the diversity and quality of its dairy products, wines, and local alcoholic beverages, such as rakija.Tavče-gravče and mastika are considered the national dish and drink of the Republic of Macedonia.

Second postcard shows Macedonian humor.

Beautiful stamps on cover. This is complete set World Wildlife Foundation - Eastern Imperial Eagle, issued on 01.02.2001. The eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) is a large species of bird of prey that breeds from southeastern Europe to western and central Asia. Most populations are migratory and winter in northeastern Africa and southern and eastern Asia.The eastern imperial eagle is a large eagle with a length of 72–90 cm, a wingspan of 1.8–2.16 m and a weight of 2.45–4.55 kilograms. Females are about a quarter larger than males.

Flag of Macedonia and The Megalithic Observatory Kokino

This is flag of Macedonia, but not the new one. On 11 August 1992, the newly independent Republic of Macedonia adopted the new flag to replace the old Communist "red star" insignia. The flag depicted the "Vergina Sun" symbol. This ancient symbol was named after the Greek town where it had been discovered in archaeological excavations of the ancient Macedonian city of Aigai.The Vergina Sun was regarded by Greece as a symbol of continuity between ancient Macedonia and modern Greek culture, and in particular as a symbol of the Argead dynasty of Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great.The flag, the new state's constitution and its name all became the focus of a dispute between the two countries, during which Greece imposed an economic blockade on the Republic from February 1994. The blockade was lifted in October 1995 when an agreement was reached to change the flag.

The Kokino megalithic observatory consists of two platforms of a combined area of about 5000 square meters, the site covers about 30 hectares. From this area, an abundant amount of fragments of ceramic vessels, dated to between the 19th and the 11th centuries BC. Also found was a mould for casting bronze axes, and a pendant. The remains of vessels filled with offerings were found deposited in cracks in the rocks, which gave rise to the interpretation of the site as a "holy mountain".

The claimed archaeo-astronomical site itself consists of two platforms with an elevation difference of 19 m. The claim of the site representing an astronomical observatory was made by Stankovski and by Gjore Cenev in 2002. According to this interpretation, the site includes special stone markers used to track the movement of the Sun and Moon on the eastern horizon. The observatory used the method of stationary observation, marking positions of the Sun at the winter and summer solstice, as well as the equinox. Four stone seats or "thrones" are placed in a row on the lower platform. According to Cenev, A stone block with a marking on the upper platform marks the direction of sunrise on summer solstice when viewed from one of the seats.

EuroBasket 2015 - stamps from Croatia and Macedonia

Macedonian and Croatian posts has released stamps EuroBasket 2015.

FIBA EuroBasket 2015, is the 39th edition of the EuroBasket championship that is organised by FIBA Europe.

It is taking place in 4 different countries (Croatia, France, Germany, and Latvia) making it the first EuroBasket to be held in more than one country. It started on 5 September, with the finale scheduled for 20 September.

The top two teams will qualify to the 2016 Summer Olympics. The next five teams advance to the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

On 18 December 2011, FIBA Europe decided to let Ukraine host Eurobasket 2015, after France, Croatia, Germany and Italy withdrew their joint bid.On 19 March 2014, tournament director Markiyan Lubkivsky announced that EuroBasket 2015 will not take place in Ukraine because of the political and financial crisis and the championship will be relocated.

The knockout stage of the EuroBasket 2015 will take place between 12 September and 20 September 2015. All games will be played at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, France.

One non-European team have won the EuroBasket, Egypt. 19 different countries have won it in total, while 47 countries have competed with Iceland being the latest of those making their debut this year in Berlin. It’s not the first time that the EuroBasket is being held in 5 different cities like many believe, but it is the first time it’s being held in 4 different countries because of the situation in Ukraine.

Macedonia: Ohrid

Ohrid is a city in the Republic of Macedonia and the seat of Ohrid Municipality. Ohrid is notable for once having had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem (of the Balkans)". The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. In 1979 and in 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In fact, Ohrid is one of only 28 sites that are part of UNESCO's World Heritage that are both Cultural and Natural sites.
