Black guillemot on cover from Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands issued two stamps for this year Europa CEPT theme National birds, both with black guillemot. I received cover with first stamp from set, issued on 29.4.2019. The black guillemot or tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized seabird of the alcid family, Alcidae, native throughout northern Atlantic coasts and eastern North American coasts. It is resident in much of its range, but large populations from the high arctic migrate southwards in winter. The bird can be seen in and around its breeding habitat of rocky shores, cliffs and islands in single or smalls groups of pairs. They feed mainly by diving towards the sea floor feeding on fish, crustaceans or other benthic invertebrates. They are listed on the IUCN red list as a species of least concern.

Thank you, Henrik!

Icons on cover from Faroe Islands

Faroese post issued set of two stamps for Christmas, which shows religious icons. First stamp is work of Faroese artist Astrid Andreasen, and second is Russian icon, which Carl Niclasen from Tórshavn bought  in 1970 from Curt Berndorff Antikviteter in Copenhagen. The home of the icon is in the Christian Orthodox Church, also called the Eastern Church, which is richly decorated with icons. It plays an important role in the worship service as well as in the everyday life of orthodox Christians. Stamps are issued in 24.9.2018.

Thank you Rosmarie!

Faroe Islands: Mykines

Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 main islands of the Faroe Archipelago. The only settlement on the island is also called Mykines. It has been suggested that the name Mykines is pre-Norse in origin, coming from muc-innis, a Celtic term for pig island. This may be a reference to whales, which are known as muc-mhara (sea sows) in Gaelic.

Stamps on postcard:
Landscapes: Village of Syðrugøta, issued on 13.2.2006.
75th Anniversary of The Faroese National Flag, issued on 24.4.2015.

Thank you Wolfgang!

Flags of the World Series: Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islandsare an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic, about halfway between Norway and Iceland, 320 kilometres north-northwest of Scotland. The islands are an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Their area is about 1,400 square kilometers with a population of 50,322 in October 2017. The Faroes' terrain is rugged, and the islands have a subpolar oceanic climate: windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Despite this island group's northerly latitude, temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream.

Four nice stamps with smeared cancelation:
Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), issued on 23.02.1998.
End of winter(Christmas Stamp), issued on 31.10.1994.
Northern Raven (Corvus corax), issued on 12.06.1995.
Scene from the Bible (Christmas Stamp), issued on 17.09.2001.

Thank you Nina!

Faroe Islands: The lighthouse in Stóra Dímun

Stóra Dímun is an island in the southern Faroe Islands, sometimes only referred to as Dímun. It is accessible by sea only during periods of clear and calm weather, but there is a regular helicopter service twice a week all year. The island has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because of its significance as a breeding site for seabirds, especially European storm petrels (15,000 pairs), Atlantic puffins (40,000 pairs) and black guillemots (50 pairs).

Stamps are EUROPA - Think Green, issued on 09.05.2016.

Thank you Rosmarie!
