First Serbian stamp was issued on 1 May (13 according to the new calendar) 1866. It was the newspaper stamp with a motif of the coat of arms of the Principality of Serbia, and it was printed in two nominal values of 1 and 2 paras. That same year, on 1866, July 1 (13 according to the new calendar) Serbia issued first regular postage stamp with the image of Prince Mihailo Obrenović III.
Printing of Serbian stamps had great significance, not only because the simplification and improvement of postal services, but primarily because of the choice of motifs (the coat of arms of the Principality and the image of the ruler) which strengthen national identity and shows state sovereignty.
